Love Song for Adrienne

I knew that I loved you,
When I saw you tremble
In this crowded theater
Of pompous fools,
With every syllable
And every metaphor
Of my being--

That is how I knew
That I had to fight
These phony usurpers
Of all that is sacred,
Pure and beautiful--

Because you showed me
That life is still
Worth something to
Believe in--

That is how I knew
That you knew it as well,
My lovely Adriatic girl,
Who would charm the pants off
Any guy in this town--

But you chose me,
My lovely flower
In this arid desert
Of googly-eyed goons
With plastic hearts
And rubbery smiles
That would stretch
From ear to ear--

Oh lovely Adrienne,
I was a fool not to notice
Your old school charm
And your new school
Brilliance,
That transcends all
That's popular and crass
In this banal world,
Filled with countless
If onlys--

But there are no more
Ifs, ands or buts
About you and me,
My love,
No more pipe dreams
Of impossible futures
And happy endings--

There is only the sound
Of your voice
And the beauty of your
Heart, radiating
With innocence
And the gentle rain of
Love,
Pouring upon us
In this beautiful
Here and now.
